Does walking in the office make good business sense??

treadmill deskWe know that sitting all day in the office is bad for our health.  So, what can we do about it?  Over the next week we will look at some conservative methods we can put in place to reduce our exposure to sitting, but first I thought we would take a look at the “Treadmill Desk”.   Yes it really exists!! Instead of sitting all day, you can walk at a slow pace and burn some calories in the office.  Save you time in going to the gym or walking after work?!So, what is a treadmill desk??  According to Wikipedia, “a treadmill desk, walking desk or treadmill workstation is a computer desk that is adapted so that the user walks on a treadmill while performing office tasks”.

But does it really work to increase physical activity, assist with weight loss, reduce stress and help prevent disease whilst at the same time maintaining the users productivity at work?  Current evidence suggests that an active workstation might be appropriate for several hours a day for non-mouse intensive related tasks.  Wikipedia further states that “reading email and surfing the Internet were found to be easier to manage than learning to type or write while standing and walking”.   So it seems to depend on what type of work you do as to whether or not your boss will be making space for a treadmill in the next budget…
